Orthodontics for Adults

While you may consider orthodontic treatment to be primarily for children, 20% of new orthodontic patients are adults. A person's age need not be a consideration in getting a beautiful smile. Thanks to today's smaller, less visible and more comfortable orthodontic appliances (including fixed braces and Invisalign™) adults are finding treatment more appealing. In addition to improving self-esteem and self-confidence, orthodontic treatment for adults can also reduce tooth wear, improve chewing, and reduce the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss.

Many orthodontic problems can be corrected as easily for adults as for children. Orthodontic forces move the teeth the same way for everyone, however adult treatment may take longer as they often have more dense mature bone.

Orthodontic treatment for adults can present some complicating factors, such as lack of jaw growth, gum or bone loss (periodontal disease), and worn or damaged teeth that create different treatment plans. Often times, a coordination of treatment between the orthodontist, oral surgeon, periodontist, endodontist, or family dentist is necessary.
